Louis Wain
Louis Wain was born on the 5th August 1860, he studied at the West London School of Art. Louis’s father died in 1880, making Louis the breadwinner for the family. Emily Richardson was employed as a Governess to look after his five sisters, and she and Louis fell in love and married on 30th January 1884.
Louis & Emily owned a kitten named Peter and around this time his artistic talents became known. Louis went back to live with his family, and had a good deal of success illustrating books and postcards. Louis’s eldest sister died in 1917 and it is from this point that his mental stability became cause for concern. He was finally certified insane on 16th June 1924 aged 64. Diagnosed schizophrenic, he was committed to a Victorian mental asylum, but nevertheless continued to produce excellent drawings, which his sisters sold along with his private collection to ease their financial situation. Louis died in Napsbury Hospital on the outskirts of St. Albans on 4th July 1939.
